In many cases they could be interchangeable. But, in my opinion: Research is more like finding out information. You could research a historical event, what restaurants are the best in a certain area, what company you want to work at, etc. Study is more like memorizing or becoming familiar with information. You might study, English, math, etc. For example, you usually study a vocabulary word (how to spell it, it's definitions, etc.). If you research a word that's more like you want to know it's origins, etc.

I agree with Dan. Yesterday I studied the types of weeds in the garden (looked with great attention at the details). Today I will research 'weeds' and find out if I can eat any of them! In my first sentence I used 'study' in place of 'looked carefully/examined). The man studied his friend's face (to see if he was upset). The cat studied the mouse for a long time, then pounced! So 'study' has a number of uses that 'research' does not. And I'm sure vice versa.
