For example, someone who is a person who is generally of good character, but lacks manners, education, or style can be described as a A ROUGH DIAMOND.
"my grandfather was a bit of a rough diamond"
Another funny example is when you think someone won't be easy to deal with, you might say;
SHE'S A TOUGH NUT TO CRACK.
This metaphoric expression alludes to hard-shelled nuts like walnuts.

I don't really know much phraseologisms in my own language but in Russian they usually say "неотшлифованный алмаз" which is literally the same as rough diamond. The same with the Tough nut to crack - "крепкий орешек" .

Uhm, I don’t know a way to describe a rough diamond in Italian 🤔 but I know for sure how to say the second idiom: “duro come le pine!” 😂 (a Tuscany way…)
