As soon as or Finally which one is correect? As soon as/Finally they removed the debris and I saw the rescuers'faces, I knew I would be safe. My leg was hurting terribly but I felt relieved just to be alive! P.S.: The key says that "As soon as" is the correct option here, but why? Could someone explain it to me please?

As soon as/Finally they removed the debris and I saw the rescuers’ faces, I knew ... 1 - “As soon as they removed” is an adverbial clause, so the “I knew ...” does not need a conjunction. 2 - “Finally they removed” is an independent clause, so the “I knew ...” is an incorrect “comma splice.”

You could say "When they finally removed the debris......." f you were trapped for a while and want to convey the feeling of anxiety you felt while you were trapped. You could also use as soon as to express the relief you felt at being freed as you stated in your sentence.

I'd say "As soon as they removed the debris, I saw ..." OR "Finally, they removed the debris and I saw..."

The removal of the debris and the speaker's seeing the rescuers' faces happened at the same time. When those two things happened, he felt relieved and safe. As soon as/the moment those two things happened, he knew he would be safe.
