Extrait de "For Esmé--with Love and Squalor"
---
Less than a minute later, Esmé came back into the tearoom, dragging Charles behind her by the sleeve of his reefer. "Charles would like to kiss you goodbye," she said.
I immediately put down my cup, and said that was very nice, but was she sure?
"Yes," she said, a trifle grimly. She let go of Charles' sleeve and gave him a rather vigorous push in my direction. He came forward, his face livid, and gave me a loud, wet smacker just below the right ear. Following this ordeal, he started to make a beeline of the door and a less sentimental way of life, but I caught the half belt at the back of his reefer, held onto it, and asked him, "What did one wall say to the other wall?"
His face lit up. "Meet you at the corner!" he shrieked, and raced out of the room, possibly in hysterics.

I really don't get to see Mother Grencher terribly often, and she's not getting any younger. She's fifty-eight. (As she'd be the first to admit.)
All the same, though, wherever I happen to be I don't think I'm the type that doesn't even lift a finger to prevent a wedding from flatting. Accordingly, I've gone ahead and jotted down a few revealing notes on the bride as I knew her almost six years ago. If my notes should cause the groom, whom I haven't met, an uneasy moment or two, so much the better. Nobody's aiming to please, here. More, really, to edify, to instruct.

Tuberculosis is called "the great imitator" because it can manifest in different parts of the body, where it is able to imitate the characteristic symptoms of many other illnesses.

The lymph nodes are a common destination for the macrophages full of mycobacteria originating from the lungs. 35% of cases of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis involve symptoms in the lymph nodes, the most common lymph sites being in the subclavicular and posterior cervical regions. It's said that tuberculosis sneaks up on the patient, because the lymph nodes are usually painless, do not exhibit tenderness, are not red and do not emit heat. That is to say that the symptoms of this illness are not visible at the start. However, they continue to develop within the body. As an increasing number of lymphocytes flood into the lymph nodes, the nodes become increasingly larger, until a fistulous tract develops just above the infected node, which has opened a hole in the skin where it deposits excess fluid filled with dead macrophages.

--
Thus, at the age of 15, the girl--whose name was not "bunny rabbit", but Annie Simons--was in the possession of two contrary desires. The first was the desire to become an adult and to relish in sins yet to be discovered. The second was to remain a child, so that she could continue taking advantage of the charm she had possessed as a child.
As she watched her boyfriend's clothes burning to ash in the family chimney, her eyes grew wide in what her father interpreted as terror. He was wrong; it was not terror. It was simply the shock of having to make a big decision. Here was the decision: she would not follow the first desire, nor would she follow the second. Instead, she would find a way to follow them both. Unlike many girls her age, who actually tried to look more grown up, she could not so easily give up the attentions that she had received in her childhood. The adoration of others had become part of her; to lose it would be like losing an arm.

All’improvviso, sentii una voce proprio dietro di me.

Last night I went to a swanky restaurant with my parents. I was wearing a pink dress with wedges. I felt pretty, mostly because I was the only young person there. All the women either had white hair, plastic surgery, or both. I, on the other hand, am at the ripe age of 19. When dinner was over, we waited outside to get the car from the valet. Just before the car pulled up, I heard a voice right behind me.
"Pardon, excusez-moi," the voice said. My ears perked up. I'm learning French, and every time I hear or seeing something in French, I feel like the universe has conspired to give me an opportunity to improve my language skills. The French monsieur had touched me on the shoulder to get in front of me and have a smoke. He was about in his forties. He got a cigarette out and began to talk to the valet. He was saying something about the French alps (in English, of course), but I can't remember what it was, because I had stars in my eyes. Not because I had fallen in love with the forty-something, but because I was hoping with all my soul that he would speak French again, so that I could learn some new vocabulary during the wait.

The professor began by talking about "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawkings, and about how no one really knows what caused the Big Bang. She told us about a strange series of coincidences in her life, beginning with a divorce and the unexpected discovery of a cross necklace in a parking lot, followed by a sudden vacancy in the chemistry department at my school. She started talking about how she saw a "light" in her students, and about the importance of love and friendship. Although she was thirty years older than me, she seemed to have a lot more life.

As a consequence, the English government restricted individual rights. For the first time in 100 years, the right of habeas corpus (a protection against arbitrary imprisonment) was revoked, public meetings were banned, and laws that prohibited Protestants from government and universities remained untouched. The events of the French Revolution additionally prompted Parliament to postpone the abolition of slavery by 16 years. During this time, slave rebellions grew, followed by the harsh reprisals of slave masters.
