Feedback is not personal Having taught English for a very long time, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the smartest people. Naturally, I’ve also had to give feedback to these high achievers—and sometimes, constructive feedback can come across as negative. However, when a teacher gives you critical feedback, it is meant entirely for your growth. You can be exceptionally intelligent and talented, but there is always room to grow and areas that need improvement. If students only seek validation and expect constant praise, there’s little point in asking for guidance in the first place. When I evaluate learners, my approach is completely objective. I assess communication style and the ability to express oneself with flexibility—not status, appearance, academic degrees, or wealth. I evaluate the communication. That is my job. It is my responsibility to share the uncomfortable truths that others might hesitate to say, especially to individuals in positions of authority. Throughout my career, I’ve coached professors, managers, and executives. The students who make real progress are always the ones willing to accept their flaws and work on them.
