A "town hall" is a building where employees of local governments work. It can all be call "city hall." A "town hall meeting" is sometimes just called "town hall" and it is a meeting where a public official answers people's questions.

Literary writing, academic writing, and colloquial internet writing are all pretty different. Native speakers often struggle with literary and academic/nonfiction reading too. It might be helpful to start with shorter and simpler texts, and to listen to the audiobook version while you read it. For novels, you could also try reading middle-grade and young adult books. The writing in them is more straight forward and could help ease you into reading more complex books.

English doesn't have a lot of friendship words. We'd usually say 'good friend' or 'best friend.' If you're very close you can also say 'oldest friend' (meaning the friend you've had the longest), 'my closest friend,' 'one of my best friends,' 'one of my closest friend,' etc.

Someone is a 'hack' when they produce low-quality, often sensationalized work that doesn't have much depth or meaning. It was originally a term to describe writers who were willing to write literally anything for money. For example, many people have called people who write for buzzfeed 'hack writers.' Someone might call someone who works for a tabloid a 'hack journalist.' We see someone as a hack when they're in a profession we think should be handled with care, but their goal isn't to do a good job; it's to make money or stir up drama or attention.
