What Does “Rückmeldung” Mean at Work?
If you work in Germany, you will hear this word all the time:
„Rückmeldung“
And no — it does not just mean feedback.
That’s where many learners get confused.
In everyday work, „Rückmeldung“ often simply means:
👉 a reply
👉 an answer
👉 an update
For example:
„Ich gebe Ihnen morgen eine Rückmeldung.“
I’ll get back to you tomorrow.
„Haben Sie schon eine Rückmeldung bekommen?“
Have you received a reply yet?
„Danke für Ihre schnelle Rückmeldung.“
Thank you for your quick response.
But it can also mean feedback, depending on the context:
„Ich hätte gerne eine Rückmeldung zu meiner Präsentation.“
I’d like some feedback on my presentation.
So the real meaning depends on the situation.
A useful rule:
If someone is waiting for an answer, decision or update, „Rückmeldung“ usually means reply / response.
If someone wants your opinion about their work, it usually means feedback.
And one phrase you will hear very often in German offices:
„Ich melde mich bei Ihnen.“
I’ll get back to you.
Very simple — but extremely useful.

3 Polite Ways to Disagree in a German Meeting
In a German meeting, you don’t always want to say:
**„Nein, das stimmt nicht.“**
*No, that’s not correct.*
That can sound a bit too direct.
Try these instead:
**1. Ich sehe das etwas anders.**
*I see it a little differently.*
→ polite and simple
**2. Ich verstehe deinen Punkt, aber …**
*I understand your point, but …*
→ good when you want to disagree without sounding unfriendly
**3. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob das die beste Lösung ist.**
*I’m not sure if that’s the best solution.*
→ perfect when you want to question an idea carefully
Small words like **„etwas“**, **„nicht ganz“** or **„ich bin mir nicht sicher“** can make a big difference in German.
