Those in a position of authority or older people sit in the "kamiza" (upper seat), which is the furthest from the entrance. People in a position to host people usually sit in the "shimoza" (lower seat), which is the closest to the entrance. It is said that the rule was established that people of higher rank should sit in the back because the barrier closest to the entrance is where people enter and exit, making it awkward.
