Attention English Language Learners: Two of the most shocking things I've learned from being an English tutor on Italki for 7 years... 1. Students from international countries assume that to speak American English you have to use perfect grammar and advanced words when you speak. That's actually mostly false. Though a bit true. See it depends really on your job. Maybe for your job you are a lawyer or a doctor and maybe your job requires you to speak advanced technical professional English. But the average every day native English speaker from the United States uses basic phrases, slang and vocabulary. We get our point across with the least amount of words possible. Our grammar is not perfect all of the time when we speak. We sometimes on occasion make a little mistake. Students assume that you must speak the same way that you write. That's not true. Casual basic spoken English is extremely different from written English. 2. Most students from international countries are either taught pronunciation is not important at all or not that important compared to grammar and sentence structure. This actually is not true. pronunciation is important. Equally important to grammar and sentence structure. Because not pronouncing a noun completely can change your spoken word to something else that you didn't mean to say. It can make your listener really struggle to understand your spoken sentence. A student could have perfect grammar and sentence structure (though not always necessary) but if a word is completely said with the wrong pronunciation that can really lead to confusion, assumptions and mis understandings from your listener. Not to say that you have to completely get rid of your accent. But you also want to learn basic pronunciation skills so your accent isn't so thick and strong that it makes words you say, not understandable. What do you struggle with the most in regards to speaking American English with native English speakers? Is it coming up with words to say? It's pronouncing them clearly so your listener can fully understand? Is it saying enough so you don't sound limited or be able to give enough variety in your responses so you don't sound repetitive? Is it phrasal verbs? Do you use them? Do you understand them? Do you know how many there are? What about your confidence? Do you second guess yourself when you speak English? Do you have a lot of 'ums' and 'uhs' when you speak American English? Do you repeat words and phrases? Do you have long pauses in between your words and phrases? Do you translate in your head before you say it? Do you depend on translating? Do you say the bare minimum which is only the few things you know how to say but if someone asks you to 'say more.' you'd have difficulty? Are you not really sure where you struggle? Have you ever had someone from the United States... a tutor or teacher really judge your speaking and give you feedback?

When you're having a face to face conversation with someone you don't want to make them do all the work to try to 'figure out what you're trying to say.' You want a clear, flowing, natural conversation with someone. You want to learn what to say and how to say it. And chances are if you're talking with a friend or family member or coworker they aren't going to directly tell you that they didn't understand you completely. You most likely have never been told exactly what you say wrong. Most students have no idea. They know they struggle but they've never actually been told if it's pronunciation or vocabulary or sentence structure. They have never really had someone from the United States really listen to all the sounds that come out of their mouth and watch what their mouth does (If it moves much or not.) Most students are taught that pronunciation isn't important.... then they wonder why they still have such a strong accent that sounds nothing at all like American English. Here are a few ways that I can help you improve your spoken American English so you sound more clear and understandable to native English speakers. That way when you speak to someone they don't have to depend on context which can lead to confusion and mis understanding. I could have a conversation with you and point out either your pronunciation mistakes or your sentence structure mistakes depending on which you choose or you can choose to get corrections on both. You would get typed and verbal corrections from me. I could teach you pronunciation skills. For example how to pronounce short vowels, long vowels and more. I could also help you learn phrasal verbs (most students know and use some but they don't know or use many of them). Prepositions (many students forget to use these or don't use the right one. Vocabulary. I've tutored 3,618 Lessons since August of 2018. You can improve your American English speaking. Check out my tutor schedule and my tutor profile!
