Why “I’ll ask her" sounds like "Alaska”?
Try saying these out loud:
"I'll ask her."
"Alaska."
Almost identical. Three syllables, stress on the middle one.
This isn't a coincidence. In fast English, contractions and pronouns at the edges of a sentence — I'll, we've, he's, her, him — lose almost all their weight. The stressed word in the middle holds everything together. Four written words can sound like one.
This is why fast English is hard to follow even when you know every word on paper.
A few more examples:
He's finished → sounds like ‘his finished’
They're hungry → sounds like ‘the hungry’
I’m coming → sounds like ‘am coming’
The fix: stop listening for individual words. Listen for the stressed syllable in the middle.
