However, it feels to me like something that actually happened in the story as a past event—meaning it 'broke' the rule/balance at that specific time. Besides, state verbs like hate or like, which also describe mental states, usually follow tense agreement with the context (for example, 'He didn’t say anything, but he hated the guests wearing shoes inside'). Why doesn't that logic apply here?
