It can be both. "The cast is very excited" and "The cast are very excited" are both correct and natural.

"Casts" only makes sense if you are comparing different movies. In one movie, it's "the cast".

Of a film or TV series, it's plural. Cast = they.

But we cannot say "casts" if we speak about the cast of a movie?
