You know the verb, but which adjective do you need?
English word families can help you express an action, tendency or characteristic more precisely:
🔁 repeat → repetitive
“My work became repetitive because I completed the same task every day.”
⚡ act / action → active
“She plays an active part in the project.”
💥 destroy → destructive
“The storm had a destructive effect on the coastline.”
The ending -ive often appears in adjectives, but you cannot add it freely to every verb or noun. The spelling and stem may change, so learn each adjective as part of a word family.
Practice: Choose the correct word:
“Constant criticism can be ______.”
destroy
destruction
destructive
