In this group course we will study the 5 basic conditional structures: the zero, first, second, third and the mixed conitionals. We will practice using each structure in exercises and group discussion activities. 

The Zero Conditional - Cause and Effect

In the first lesson of the course students will study the structure and use of the zero conditional which is used to describe simple cause and effect relationships. 

The First Conditional - Predictions

In the second lesson students will study the structure and use of the 1st conditional which is used to make predictions.

The Second Conditional - Hypothetical Situations

In the third lesson students will study the structure and use of the 2nd conditional which is used for describing hypotheticals.

The Third Conditional - Hypothetical Situations in the Past 

In the fourth lesson students wil study the structure and use of the 3rd conditional which is use to talk about past hypothetical situations. 

Mixed Conditionals -  Hypotheticals in the Past and Present

In our first lesson, we start by learning the fundamental ideas about how different cultures can affect how we talk and understand each other. Communication is at the core of good cross-cultural interactions. In this lesson, we will go deep into how to talk well when you're with people from various backgrounds. We will look at real-life stories and practical situations to show you ways to avoid misunderstandings, change your way of talking, and build stronger connections in global situations. We will use examples from Erin Meyer's book, "The Culture Map," to help you get a good foundation for managing cultural differences.


Chapters 1 - 2: Communicating and Evaluating

Learn how different cultures influence communication and understanding, laying the groundwork for effective cross-cultural interactions.
Explore practical strategies for communicating effectively with people from various cultural backgrounds.

Discuss how individuals from different ends of the Trusting Scale may misinterpret each other's intentions and evaluate the placement of the US on this scale.

Explore Meyer's suggestion of building trust by focusing on common interests and provide examples of employing this strategy.

Examine Meyer's recommendation of considering the communication medium based on the recipient's culture's position on the Trusting Scale.

Identify factors influencing the choice of communication medium when interacting with individuals from different cultural backgrounds.

Chapters 7 - 8: Disagreeing and Scheduling

Examine the factors influencing a culture's placement on the confrontational scale and the significance of 'face' in many Asian cultures, as discussed in Chapter 7 of Erin Meyer's book.

Compare and contrast how disagreement might manifest in a German context versus a Mexican context, considering emotional expressiveness and confrontation.

Analyze the three different outcomes for a 'good meeting' listed by Meyer on page 213 and discuss how placement on the confrontational scale influences these definitions.

Explore the differences between monochromatic/linear-time cultures and polychromatic/flexible-time cultures regarding arrival times, scheduling, waiting or queuing, and meeting agendas, as outlined in Chapter 8 of the book.

Discuss the cultural values that lead some cultures to prioritize punctuality (e.g., Germany) while others value flexibility (e.g., Burundi) in their perceptions of time.

Putting the Culture Map to Work

In our last lesson, we focus on how to solve problems and use what you've learned in real situations. You'll learn about managing and solving issues that can happen when different cultures meet. We'll also look at real stories and situations, giving you a chance to use what you've learned in a practical way.

Utilize the attached cultural map or the maps provided in each chapter of the book to select 1-3 cultures (other than your own) with which you regularly interact. Identify significant differences between these cultures and your own, and discuss your insights with a partner at your table.

Based on the insights gained from the cultural map and the book, identify three specific actions you can take to enhance communication with clients or colleagues from different cultures. Share your action items with others at your table for feedback and discussion.

Unlocking Cross-Cultural Communication with 'The Culture Map' (New & Improved Course!) 

The present perfect verb tense in English is very common in speaking and writing. We use the present perfect to express several different concepts. It is important to know how to use this verb tense (as with all verb tenses) because it conveys a great deal of meaning. This course will introduce the students to 4 primary uses of the present perfect as well as how its use is different from the present simple verb tense. And at the end of each lesson the students will practice using the present perfect in group discussion activities. 


Introduction

We study the difference in use between the present simple and present perfect and practice it in structured activities

"Oh no! I have just hit my head!"

We study how to use the present perfect to talk about things that happened recently using the word "just"

Adventure Holiday

We study how to use the present perfect to talk about experiences that we may or may not have had at an unspecified time in the past using the words "never" and "ever"

Old Friends

We study how to use the present perfect to talk about situations that began in the past and may be continuing or have an effect on the present using the words "since" and "for." 

Party Time

We study how to use the present perfect to talk about actions or tasks that may or may not have been completed in the past using the words "already," "still" and "yet"

Present Perfect Deep Dive with Teacher James 

If you sometimes mix up the Present Perfect and the Past Simple, aren't sure when to use infinitives or gerunds, only use "will" when talking about the future, or basically find it hard to speak using proper grammar, then this course will help you. 

Each lesson will cover different grammar topics at the A2 level, so to join the course, you must have completed the A1 level. 

We'll not only study grammar, but we'll also practise the structures learned in speaking activities to work on your fluency and accuracy. 

This course will last for 3 months and will include 12 lessons. By the end of the course, you will be able to see the difference between different tenses and use them correctly, use a variety of structures to talk about the future, and use prepositions, gerunds and infinitives properly. Additionally, you will be more confident in speaking with proper grammar and talking about daily life topics.

Present Simple vs Present Continuous 

You will see the difference between these tenses, especially when you want to talk about a longer period of time in the present.

Past Simple (regular/irregular verbs)

You will revise the Past Simple form and how to use it, and later you will easily compare it to Present Perfect.

Past Continuous

You'll learn how to talk about longer actions in the past e.g., when you want to tell a story. Knowing this tense is very important if you want to sound fluent in English.

Present Perfect vs Past Simple

You will compare these two tenses and see the main difference between them. After this lesson you won't have any problems deciding which tense to use and why.

Gerund (verb+ing) vs Infinitive 

Pretend 'to do' or pretend 'doing'? You'll learn how to use infinitives and gerunds after verbs, and use them in speaking.

Talking about real and unreal situations now or in the future 

We'll study the 1st and 2nd Conditionals in order to talk about possible and unreal situations in the future or now.

Revision (1-6 units) + Speaking 

This lesson is designed to review the previously studied materials and to practise all of the structures in speaking activities only.

Using will/won't 

You will learn how to use 'will and won't' properly. Some students use these to talk about plans, but is it really used this way? You'll find it out!

'be going to' structure 

We'll learn what the structure is used for and how to form the sentences correctly. Sometimes I see students misuse it or not see the difference between it and the Present Continuous.

Present Continuous for talking about the future 

You will learn how to talk about the future using the Present Continuous tense. It is very common, even more common than 'will/won't' in some cases. 

Adjectives and verbs + prepositions 

Prepositions are always a problem when you study English. We'll look at the most common dependent prepositions, in which students often make mistakes. 

Revision (8-11 units) + Speaking

The course lasts for 6 weeks, one lesson per week.

Each week you will read a bit of the book BEFORE the lesson. Then, in our lesson we will meet to discuss what we have read. 

The course includes a lot of extra materials - usually YouTube videos - that will help give you a wider understanding of the points mentioned in the book. 

The course is suitable for strong B2 level students and above. The level of English in the book is actually quite simple but you need to read roughly 50-60 pages per week so it requires a reasonable level of commitment.
