Class description
A Communication-Focused Discussion Group: Heated Rivalry
This small group class uses Heated Rivalry (and the wider series) as a lens to explore how language shapes relationships, accountability, and meaning in English.
We’ll discuss and analyse selected moments from the book, including:
character dynamics and relationships
conflict, repair, and apology
power, intention vs impact
tone, subtext, and what is left unsaid
We’ll also take a broader, film-club style view, looking at:
plot and structure
setting and atmosphere
emotional pacing
how dialogue functions almost like cinematography or music in storytelling
This is not a grammar class and not a traditional book club.
It’s a guided, discussion-based space for advanced learners who enjoy thinking deeply about language, storytelling, and communication.
Fiction is used as a shared reference point, making it easier to talk about complex or sensitive topics without personal pressure.
If you enjoy thoughtful conversation, close reading, and slightly nerdy analysis, you’ll fit right in.
After this class, you’ll have learned
By the end of this class, students will:
Practise expressing nuanced opinions and interpretations in spoken English
Develop greater awareness of tone, subtext, and accountability in language
Improve fluency when discussing relationships, emotions, and complex dynamics
Build confidence contributing to analytical, discussion-based conversations
Transfer insights from fiction to real-life communication at work and beyond
