Class description

The traditional family was once the cornerstone of Western society, and still is in many Middle Eastern and African cultures. But since the 1950s, public perception has shifted. What was once seen as a source of stability is now, for some, a symbol of outdated values and repression. Are gendered parental roles harmful or protective? Is increased state and corporate involvement in childcare a safeguard against prejudice, or a mechanism of ideological control? What happens to a civilisation when it outsources its moral education, delays childbirth and rejects traditional structures? In this lesson, we’ll debate whether the traditional family is a lost foundation of social order, or a relic of a more rigid, unequal past.
