It consists of three characters: 断 (Dan): This represents "refusal" or "elimination." It involves refusing unnecessary possessions, attachments, or distractions from one's life. 捨 (Sha): This stands for "disposal" or "getting rid of." It involves letting go of possessions that are no longer needed or serve no purpose. 離 (Ri): This signifies "separation" or "detachment." It involves detachment from material possessions and emotional attachments, freeing oneself from the burden of excess belongings or unnecessary emotional baggage. Overall, 断捨離 encourages a minimalist lifestyle, emphasizing the importance of simplifying one's surroundings, thoughts, and emotions to achieve greater clarity, focus, and inner peace. It's not just about decluttering physical spaces but also about decluttering the mind and emotions.
