Class description
Let's Debate! In this group class we will have a series of debates which could touch on topics such as business, technology, education, economy, society, health, and more. In each 60 minute group class there will be 2-3 'debatable' statements. Sometimes these statements will be related to just one topic, like AI or globalisation, but could also be about 3 completely different topics, depending on how the debate flows.
Before the class starts, please prepare just one statement. This is to say, think of a statement which you would like to debate. For example, "non-electric cars should be prohibited in the future", "workers should be allowed to work 4 days a week instead of 5", "AI is more of an opportunity than a risk for society", "there should be an age limit to be a president/prime-minister", virtual meetings will never fully replace face-to-face meetings", etc. These are just a few examples but ideally I would like you to think of your own statements - Please don't be shy! - just remember that the statement has to be a statement ('this is better than that', 'this should do that') not a question or a topic (not just 'AI').
If you are struggling to think of a statement, please refer to the class materials where I have provided links with many debate statements examples to browse.
After this class, you’ll have learned
This is for everyone wanting to really challenge themselves to think, and have fun along the way in a respectable way. My debate group classes are a rare opportunity to debate in English, which might be difficult to near impossible if you don't live in an English speaking country.
Personally, I love debates. That is not to say I like to argue. On the contrary, I love listening to them and, in this case, I love hosting them! As the host, my job is to encourage the debate to flow. I will do my best to make sure everyone has a chance to share their opinion, as well as to challenge each of you by asking follow-up questions whenever something is not 100% clear. It's not an exaggerated to say that I have either listened or participated in 1000s of hours of debates, so trust me when I say this group class will really put your debating skills to the test. Remember - it's a debate! So having different opinions is the best case scenario!
