Throughout the 20th century, many scientists believed that bilingual children would have trouble concentrating and learning in school. In the last decade, however, studies have proved just the opposite.

People that speak more than one language often perform better on tests that measure problem solving, concentration, mental flexibility and multitasking.

Basically, speaking more than one language keeps your brain fit!

Over half of the world’s population speak more than one language, and most countries have more than one official language. Native English speakers usually only grow up speaking one language.

Young children learn language easily, but that’s because they’re constantly surrounded by native speakers! Unfortunately, adults don’t have that luxury.

Bilingual brains have more grey matter. This part of the brain controls our muscles, sight, hearing, emotions, speech, and decision making. Learning another language makes our brains work harder and builds up our grey matter.

Some schools in the U.K. and America have started conducting lessons in one language in the morning and switching to a different language for lessons in the afternoon. Teachers say that the children concentrate much better and have more self-esteem.

For adults, it’s sometimes hard to stay motivated when learning another language, so make sure it’s always an enjoyable experience! Be sure to set goals for yourself, try a lot of different learning activities and talk to native speakers as much as you can.

Don’t worry about the mistakes you make, after all, the reward for all that hard work is well worth it!

Learning Another Language Keeps Your Brain Fit and Healthy

Jeanne d'Arc, surnommée "La Pucelle d'Orléans", incarne le courage et le dévouement dans l'histoire de France. Née en 1412, elle a lutté avec foi et ténacité pour libérer la France de l'occupation anglaise durant la guerre de Cent Ans. 

Ses visions divines l'ont guidée dès l'âge de 17 ans, la poussant à couronner Charles VII à Reims. Soutenue par sa foi, elle devient une chef militaire influente, catalysant la victoire à Orléans en 1429. Capturée par les ennemis, elle subit un procès injuste et est brûlée en 1431. Son sacrifice renforce sa légende, et sa réhabilitation en 1456 souligne son innocence.

Sainte canonisée en 1920, elle inspire au-delà des frontières, symbolisant courage et idéaux nobles, un pilier de l'histoire française et un exemple durable de dévouement à une cause plus grande.

カンパネラ少年は、学校が終わると、まっすぐにサンセット通りの科学塾にむかいます。
『魔法ごっこ』をして あそんでいる ともだちを よこ目に、「魔法なんてウソっぱちだ」と、この調子。
勉強が大好きなカンパネラ少年が信じているのは、目に見えるものだけでした。
　「ごはんよ。おりてきなさい、カンパネラ」
　「ちょっとまって、母さん。となりの星にハシゴが とどきそうなんだ」
カンパネラ少年は、星空で おこなわれている赤いハシゴの工事に夢中です。
科学塾から帰ってきては、ばんごはんも そっちのけで、望遠鏡をのぞいてばかり。

ある日のこと。
その日は、遠くの『えんとつ町』から あがったけむりの量が多くて、星空をうまく のぞくことが できませんでした。しかたがないので、カンパネラ少年は望遠鏡の むきを変えることにしました。
そのときです。
とめていたネジがゆるみ、望遠鏡のさきが くるりと下を むきました。
空中帝国の足もと５０００メートルには、うっそうと ひろがる『森』があります。
　「そうえいば、『森』は どうなっているんだろう？」
カンパネラ少年は、そのまま望遠鏡を のぞきこみました。

なん千年も昔、人間は海から生まれ、あの『森』で暮らした時期があったといいます。これは、空中帝国に住む現代の人間には かんがえられないことでした。『森』は悪性の細菌だらけで、とても人が住める環境ではないからです。年に数回、防護スーツに身をつつんだ帝国の調査団が、『森』へおりているという うわさもありますが、だれひとりとして、そのすがたを見た人はいません。
「『森』には、いったいなにがあるんだろう。」
