さて今日は "あいまいな日本語" についてお話ししようと思います。
まず ”あいまい" の意味とは "はっきりしない" とか "わかりにくい" といった意味です。
漢字で "あいまい" と書くことができますか。
"あいまい" という漢字もこの機会に覚えてくださいね。

話は戻りますが、”あいまいな日本語" とはどんな言葉があると思いますか。
例えば "大丈夫です" という言葉があります。
レストランでコーヒーを飲んでいる時に店員さんから
「コーヒーのおかわりはいかがですか？」と言われて
「はい、大丈夫です」とか、
会社の人に「明日ランチに行きませんが？」と言われて
「大丈夫です」とか、こんな感じで日本人は「大丈夫です」という言葉をよく使っています。

「大丈夫」という言葉は Yes でも No でも使われるので
その状況や雰囲気で Yes なのか No なのかを判断しなければいけません。
ですから日本語学習者にとって判断することはとても難しく
"あいまいな言葉" となります。

では、、　Aさん「明日ご飯を食べに行きませんか？」
　　　　    Bさん「大丈夫です」

この場合の「大丈夫です」は「行きません」もしくは「行けません」の意味になることが多いです。
では何故ここで「大丈夫です」とあいまいな言葉を使うのか？
それはご飯を食べに行きませんか？と誘ってくれた相手に
「行きません」とか「行けません」とはっきり言うよりも
あいまいな言葉で相手が少しでも傷つかないように...と考えている日本人が多いからだと思います。

"あいまいな日本語" は確かにわかりづらく、少し理解するのが難しいかもしれませんが
”相手を傷つけたくない" とか "悲しい思いをさせたくない" など
相手に対する "思いやりの心" が詰まっています。
このポッドキャストの後に "あいまいな日本語" を聞いた時は
それはあなたに対する "日本人の優しさ" として受け止めてあげてください。
Yesなのか Noなのか 判断することが難しい時には
「どちらの意味ですか？」とはっきり聞いてもいいと思います。

It's been a while since I posted something. Happy 2023! 

I recently watched The Glory and am currently watching My Name on Netflix. They are similar because both of the lead characters are seeking revenge. 

It got me thinking.

Since two wrongs don't make a right, should we always be the bigger person and show mercy?

To forgive and forget?
To forgive but never forget?

Or

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

Is there a limit to what we can put up with as humans? What do we do if someone crosses that line?

It was fascinating and I am enjoying My Name so far. I will watch the final episode tonight and post my thoughts after that.

Greenland's prime minister has said that the people of the mineral-rich Arctic territory don't want to be Americans.

However, he understands the US President-elect Donald Trump's interest in the island given its strategic location, and he's open to greater cooperation with Washington.

The comments from the Greenlandic leader, Múte B. Egede, came after Trump said that he wouldn't rule out using force or economic pressure in order to make Greenland — a semiautonomous territory of Denmark — a part of the US.

Trump said that it was a matter of national security for the US.

Egede acknowledged that Greenland is part of the North American continent, and "a place that the Americans see as part of their world." He said he hasn't spoken to Trump, but that he's open to discussions about what "unites us."

"Cooperation is about dialogue. Cooperation means that you will work towards solutions," he said.

Egede has been calling for independence for Greenland, presenting Denmark as a colonial power that hasn't always treated the Indigenous Inuit population well.

"Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic," he said.

Trump's desire for Greenland has caused anxiety across Europe. The US is a strong ally of the European Union, and many Europeans were shocked by the suggestion that an incoming US leader could even consider using force against an ally.

Greenland has a population of 57,000. But it is a vast territory possessing natural resources that include oil, gas, and rare earth elements, which are expected to become more accessible as ice melts because of climate change.

It also has a key strategic location in the Arctic, where Russia, China and others are seeking to expand their interests.

Greenland, the world's largest island, lies closer to the North American mainland than to Denmark.
