This is the single most under-taught thing in Malayalam, and it is what quietly keeps intermediate learners sounding like beginners for years. Hold a vowel twice as long and the word changes meaning. Not the accent. The meaning. മല (mala) a mountain → മാല (maala) a garland, a necklace മുടി (mudi) hair → മൂടി (moodi) a lid, a cover കുടി (kudi) drinking → കൂടി (koodi) also, along with അടി (adi) a hit, the bottom → ആടി (aadi) danced, swayed കല (kala) art → കാല (kaala) leg, and also time or era Why your ear resists it: English long vowels are not the same vowel held longer, they are a different vowel. Ship and sheep use two different tongue positions. So when you are told to make a long ah, your mouth reaches for a different sound instead of holding the same one. Malayalam wants the same note, held for two beats.
