Hello. This is episode 6 of season 3 of my podcast. It's getting quite warm in Osaka. Summer is good because it brightens up my mood. Last month two different students of mine came to Osaka on holiday, so I went out to dinner with each of them. We had a lot of fun.

私は最近よくカフェに行きます。私はいままであまりカフェに行きませんでした。時間やお金の無駄だと思っていたからです。しかし家でずっと仕事をしていると、気分転換が難しい時があります。仕事がある日は、気分転換をしたくても、遠くに出かけられません。そんなときにカフェはちょうどいいです。30分カフェにいるだけで、遠くに出かけた気持ちになれるからです。

I often go to cafes these days. I didn’t use to go to cafes very often because I thought it was a waste of time and money. However, when I am working at home all the time, it is sometimes difficult to take a break. On days when I have to work, even if I want to take a break, I can't go that far. A café is just right for such a situation, because even just 30 minutes in a café makes me feel like I have gone far away from home.

私の家の近くにはたくさんカフェがあります。ほとんどのカフェは、自家焙煎をしています。自家とは、他のサービスを使わずに自分たちだけですることです。焙煎とは、コーヒー豆をローストすることです。なので、コーヒーの味がカフェによって違います。大阪は日本で一番カフェが多い県だそうです。東京よりも多いです。大阪では第二次世界大戦より前からコーヒーが人気で、昔からカフェがたくさんあったそうです。

There are many cafes near my house. Most of these cafes do jikabaisen. Jika (home/own-) means that they do it by themselves without using other services. Baisen (roasting) means roasting coffee beans. Therefore, the taste of the coffee differs from cafe to cafe. It is said that Osaka is the Japanese prefecture with the most cafes. It has even more than Tokyo. Coffee was popular in Osaka before World War II, and there have been many cafes there for a long time.

家でおいしいコーヒーを作るのは大変なので、カフェは便利ですね。はい、じゃあ今日はこんな感じで終わりたいと思います。また次回お会いしましょう。どうもありがとうございました。

もうすぐ春なので、新しい生徒さんが増えています。春は新しいことを始めたくなる季節ですね。私も現在いろいろなことを計画しています。たとえば、エピソード３でワイヤレスイヤホンを買った話をしました。なので先週、イヤホンをデスクトップパソコンでも使えるようにするために、パソコンに無線LANカードを取り付けました。無線LANカードのWi-FiやBluetoothは思ったより良かったので、キーボードもマウスもワイヤレスにしようと計画しています。そうすればケーブルが少なくなって、机の周りがすっきりします。

It's almost spring and I have more new students. Spring is the season when you want to start something new. I’m currently planning a lot of things myself. For example, in episode 3 I talked about buying wireless earphones. So last week, I installed a wireless LAN card in my computer so that I can use the earphones with my desktop computer. The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the wireless LAN card were better than I expected, so I plan to make the keyboard and mouse wireless as well. That way there will be fewer cables and a cleaner desk area.

計画はもう一つあります。私はよくベッドで本を読みますが、うちにはサイドテーブルがないので、飲み物を置く場所がありません。私は家で運動するので、部屋にサイドテーブルを置きたくありません。インターネットでカップホルダーを探しましたが、なかなかちょうどいいサイズのものがありません。そこで３Dプリンターを使って、ベッドのヘッドボードにつけられるカップホルダーを作ろうと考えています。３Dモデルを自分でモデリングしてデータを送ると、３Dプリントしてくれるサービスがあります。

私は最近、お腹が痛かったです。痛みが何日も続いて、原因がわかりませんでした。最近毎日仕事をしていたので、胃潰瘍になったかもしれないと思いました。胃潰瘍は、胃の病気です。今週レッスンが終わった後、すぐに近所の病院に行きました。お腹が痛いと歩くのが大変です。うちから近所の病院まで歩いて10分ぐらいですが、30分ぐらいに感じました。私は車を持っていないので、こういうときは車を持っている人を羨ましく感じます。

I have had a stomach ache lately. The pain lasted for days and I could not figure out the cause. I thought I might have an ikaiyou because I had been working every day recently. An ikaiyou (a stomach ulcer) is a stomach problem. I went to a local hospital right after I finished my lessons this week. It is hard to walk when your stomach hurts. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from my house to the neighborhood hospital, but it felt like 30 minutes. I don't have a car, so at times like this I envy those who do.

病院で診てもらったところ、「食中毒かもしれない」と言われました。最近、普段買わない魚を自分で料理して食べたので、それが原因かもしれません。私は「胃潰瘍の検査を受けたい」と頼みましたが、「胃がとても腫れているので、今日は胃カメラを使った検査はできない」と断られました。その日は点滴をして、薬をもらって、帰りました。なので、原因がまだわかりません。食中毒なら2、3日で治るはずです。薬を飲んでいるうちに、痛みはよくなりました。

Hello. This is episode 3 of season 3 of my podcast. I finally got a new computer. It was from a factory in Shanghai, so it took two weeks from the time I ordered it until it arrived. The new computer is very fast and convenient. I can open many applications at once. It makes it easier for me to do my lessons.

新しいパソコンが届く前に、ワイヤレスイヤホンを買いました。新しいパソコンを買った時にもらったギフトカードを使ったので、払ったのは800円だけでした。私は今まで有線のイヤホンを使っていました。有線とは、コードがあることです。今までは有線のイヤホンのほうが便利だと思っていました。充電も接続も必要ないからです。だけどワイヤレスイヤホンを使ってみると、コードが邪魔だったことに気づきました。とくに運動をするときは、ワイヤレスの方が集中できます。

I bought wireless earbuds before my new computer arrived. I used a gift card I got when I bought my new computer, so all I paid was 800 yen. I had been using yuusen earphones. Yuusen means “with a cord”. I used to think that earphones with a cord were more convenient. Because I don't need to charge or connect them. But when I started using wireless earphones, I realized that the cords were in the way. Especially when I exercise, I can concentrate better with wireless earphones.

新しいイヤホンはカナル型です。カナル型は、イヤーピースがついたイヤホンです。中学生の時はカナル型を使っていましたが、最近はずっとインナーイヤー型を使っていました。インナーイヤー型は、イヤーピースのないイヤホンです。プラスチックの部分を直接耳に入れるイヤホンです。カナル型のイヤホンは周りの音が聞こえにくいので、外で使うのは危ないと思っていました。だけど実際に使ってみると、インナーイヤー型とあまり変わりません。そして、音質がとてもいいです。

前回はパソコンを買い替える話をしました。今日、新しいパソコンを注文しました。私が注文したのはM1チップのMacBook Airです。M1モデルを選んだ理由は2つあります。一つ目の理由はノッチです。M2モデルには画面にノッチがついています。ノッチとはカメラの周りの黒い部分のことです。私はよくメニューバーの真ん中を使うので、ノッチが邪魔に感じました。二つ目の理由は、今年の3月にM3モデルが発売するという噂があったからです。M3モデルが発売したら、M1モデルはなくなってしまうかもしれません。また3月に私が今使っている2017年製のMacBookのサポートが終了します。サポートが終了したら、売る時の値段が安くなってしまうかもしれません。

Last time I talked about replacing my computer. Today I actually ordered a new computer. I ordered the MacBook Air with the M1 chip. I chose the M1 model for two reasons. The first reason is the notch. The notch is the black area around the camera. I often use the middle of the menu bar, so I found the notch annoying. The second reason is that there was a rumour that the M3 model would be released in March of this year. If the M3 model is released, the M1 model may disappear. In addition, support for my current 2017 MacBook is due to end in March. Once this happens, the resale value might fall.

しかし、M1モデルは2020年発売なので、スペックが充分かどうか不安でした。そこでパソコンに詳しい生徒さんたちからアドバイスをもらって、ユニファイドメモリを16GBにアップグレードしました。私は今大学生なので学割が使えるし、キャンペーンのギフトカードがもらえたので、合計で41800円安くなりました。今使っている2017年製のMacBookの下取りを合わせると、あと1万円ぐらい安くなるかもしれません。下取りとは、新しい物を買うときに、同時に古い物を同じ店に売って、割引を受けることです。とてもいい買い物でした。届くのが楽しみです。

Lately, my computer has been acting up. The MacBook Air I'm currently using was released in 2017, so I've been using it for seven years now. Generally, MacBooks are said to be usable for around 10 years. While there are no issues with the computer's performance, it seems that the battery is not in good condition. When I unplug the charging cable from the computer, the battery’s Zanryou quickly drops to 0%. Zanryou refers to the amount of something that remains and is used for power and energy. In addition to the problem with the battery, there are rumors that support for the 2017 MacBook will end this year.

そこで、今年はパソコンを買い換えようと考えています。先週近所のアップルストアに行きました。午後7時を過ぎてから行きましたが、店内はまだとても混んでいました。MacBook Airのコーナーには2種類のモデルがあったので、店員に違いについて質問しました。最近の家電はたくさんモデルがあって、選ぶのに時間がかかってしまいますね。去年の年末に大学の学費を払い、シカゴに旅行に行ったばかりので、いまは余計なお金を払いたくありませんが、長く使うことを考えると一番新しいモデルを買った方がいい気がします。どれを買おうかまだ迷っています。

Hello, this is episode 20 of season 2 of my podcast. I've recently been travelling to Chicago and also meeting students in Osaka. It's very cold in Osaka right now. It's so cold that I bought Anka. Anka is a heating device that warms your feet. It is convenient because you can use it at your desk or on your bed. (It's a small electronic device that you can rest your feet on.)

もう今年も終わりですね。生徒さんの中にも、学校や仕事が終わって冬休みを過ごしている人がたくさんいます。最近、生徒さんとライフワークバランスの話をよくします。私もたまには出かけようと思って、外に出ましたが、今日は気温が2度しかなくてとても寒かったです。梅田の近くのクリスマスマーケットを見に行こうと思いましたが、思わず諦めてしまいました。「思わず」とは、するつもりがなかったのに、してしまうことです。代わりに近所でコーヒーを買って、スーパーで買い物をして帰りました。

It's the end of another year. Many of my students are enjoying their winter holidays after school and work. Recently, I have been talking a lot with my students about work-life balance. Therefore I decided to go out once in a while, but it was very cold today with a temperature of only 2 degrees Celsius (35.6F). I thought about going to see the Christmas market near Umeda, but I omowazu gave up. Omowazu (unintentionally) means that you didn't intend to, but you did. Instead, I bought a coffee in my neighbourhood, did some shopping at a supermarket and went home.

スーパーには正月の食材がたくさん並んでいます。カニや、数の子や、干し柿があります。正月はクリスマスの後ですが、日本では正月の方が長い祝日なので、クリスマスの時期から正月の準備を始める家が多いです。クリスマスの食べ物は24日だけ売ってます。12月のスーパーは忙しそうです。正月やクリスマスのための特別な商品を売りますし、正月の間は閉まるので、今はとても混雑しています。私はいつも水を買いますが、運ぶのが重いので少しずつ買わなければなりません。

今日は回転寿司の話をします。日本ではレストランや、スーパーや、駅など、いろいろなところで寿司が買えます。なので、高い寿司と安い寿司があります。回転寿司は、一般的に、安い寿司が食べられるレストランです。安いので、学生や、子供がいる家族に人気です。一方で、マナーが悪い客が問題になっています。今年の１月、高校生が回転寿司で迷惑なことをして、SNSにアップロードする事件がありました。それから回転寿司のイメージが悪くなってしまい、日本では少し人気がなくなっています。

Today I will talk about kaitenzushi (conveyor belt sushi). In Japan, you can buy sushi at restaurants, supermarkets, train stations and many other places. So there is expensive sushi and cheap sushi. Kaitenzushi is generally a restaurant where you can eat cheap sushi. Because it is inexpensive, it is popular with students and families with children. On the other hand, customers with bad manners have become a problem. In January this year, there was an incident in which a high school student behaved badly at a kaitenzushi restaurant and uploaded it to social networking sites. Since then, the image of kaitenzushi has been tarnished and it has become a little less popular in Japan.

だけど、最近の回転寿司はとても便利です。回転寿司のチェーンは、ハイテク化が進んでいます。レストランで順番を待ったり、注文をしたり、お金を払ったりするプロセスを、全てセルフサービスで行える店があります。私は先週、初めて近所の回転寿司に行きました。便利で驚きました。座ったまま何でもできて、私が子供の頃行った回転寿司とは全然違いました。このチェーンでは、仕事を全部AIに任せて、完全に無人にする計画があるそうです。「無人」とは、まったく人がいないことです。SFみたいですね。
