In this podcast, we talk about the following ten words:
Souvenir: Derived from the French word "souvenir," meaning "to remember," this word entered English in the late 18th century. It refers to an object or memento that serves as a reminder of a person, place, or event.

Rendezvous: Originating from the French phrase "rendez-vous," which means "meeting" or "appointment," this word entered English in the 16th century. 

Cuisine: Borrowed directly from French, "cuisine" refers to a style or method of cooking, often associated with a particular culture or region. It encompasses the preparation and presentation of food.

Fiancé/Fiancée: These terms come from the French words "fiancé" (masculine) and "fiancée" (feminine), both meaning "engaged." They are used to describe a person who is engaged to be married.

Déjà vu: This widely recognized phrase comes from French, where it literally means "already seen." It refers to the feeling or sensation that one has experienced the present situation before, even though it is new.

Encore: Borrowed from French, "encore" means "again" or "once more." It is often used in the context of a performance to request an additional or repeated act from the performer.

Lingerie: Derived from the French word "lingerie," this term refers to women's underwear and intimate apparel. It encompasses a range of garments, including bras, panties, nightgowns, and robes.

Décor: Also borrowed from French, "décor" denotes the overall style, arrangement, and aesthetics of a space or setting. It refers to the decorative elements used to enhance the ambiance or atmosphere.

Croissant: This word, of French origin, describes a flaky and crescent-shaped pastry. It has become popular worldwide and is often enjoyed as a breakfast or snack item.

Ballet: Originating from French, "ballet" refers to a highly expressive and intricate form of dance. It combines precise movements, graceful gestures, and storytelling to create a visual spectacle.

In part 2 of your IELTS test you have to speak on a topic for 2 minutes. Here are three things you should do in your one minute preparation time. 

1.Make a note of synonyms. Paraphrasing is an important skill to master when taking your IELTS exam. In fact, if you want to score a band score 6, you have to be able to generally paraphrase successfully. If you want a band score 7, you have to be able to paraphrase effectively. 

2. Think about idioms. Idioms are very important if you want to score above band score 6. To get band score 7, you have to use some less common idiomatic expressions. That’s a tricky thing to wrap your head around. Using idioms are extremely important. If you use idioms more than once in a blue moon, you will have a greater chance of achieving a band score 7. This is just a stab in the dark, but I expect most students would like to achieve a band score 7.

3. Think about connectives - linking words. Discourse markers are also important and will help you to move through the subheadings on your card smoothly and effortlessly. Phrase like “Now let me tell you about” or “Now I’d like to explain why…” or “let me tell you the reason why I….” will make your English speaking sound natural and fluent.

Japanese daily life podcast のAtsushiです。
このPodcastは、日本語を勉強しているみなさんに向けたPodcastです。

海外旅行、ケルンの話が続きます。
昼ご飯を食べたあと、いくつかコーヒーショップに連れて行ってくれました。

2つの店ではコーヒー豆を買いましたので、その店の話をします。

1つ目の店は、

シャモン？チャモン？コーヒーです。

ここはコーヒー豆がメインのお店でした。
コーヒー豆を買いに来る人がとても多かったです。
もちろん、横でドリンクも頼めました。
ラテをオーダーしましたが、エスプレッソの味がしっかりしていて、でもさわやかな後味でおいしかったです。
この店のエスプレッソマシンがマルゾッコ、という会社のマシンでした。僕は以前働いていたコーヒーショップで、10年ぐらいこのマシンを使っていました。だから見ていてとてもうらやましかったです。ちょっと使いたいな、と思います。

地元の方がよくコーヒー豆を買いに来ていました。
地域に愛されている店なんだなと思って、自分もうれしい気持ちになりました。

2つ目の店はこちらです。

ここもコーヒー豆がメインの店でした。　
この店では、ラッキーなことにちょうどコーヒーを焙煎ばいせん、している時でした。僕の知り合いの方が店の人に話しかけてくれたので、10分ぐらいコーヒーの税金の話などをしてくれていました。

どちらの店でも感じたことですが、働いている人が自然に楽しんで働いている感じがしました。それがとても印象的でした。

もちろん、日本のカフェで働いている人たちも楽しんで働いています。でもそれは少しだけ作られたもののような気がしますが、それは感じませんでした。スタッフとお客さんがフラットな関係なのも影響してきるかもしれないですね。

とにかく、良い笑顔の人が多かったです。


信頼されて、任されて、自分で判断できる仕事だと、人は生き生きと働くんだなと改めて思いました。

ということで、ケルンのコーヒーショップとそこで感じたことの話でした。
