This episode gives students of English some advice about how to answer a common question type from Part 3 of the IELTS speaking test. Students will listen to some structures and phrases that will help them to compare the past and the present (in this case, relating to their hometown).

IELTS Part 3: "How has your hometown changed in the last 20 years?"

李明lǐ míng 刚gāng 上shàng 一yī 年级nián jí ，非常fēi cháng 不bù 喜欢xǐ huān 做zuò 作业zuò yè 。一天yī tiān 晚上wǎn shang ，他tā 对duì 妈妈mā ma 说shuō ：”妈妈mā ma ，我wǒ 今天jīn tiān 不bù 想xiǎng 写xiě 作业zuò yè 了le ，明天míng tiān 写xiě 可以kě yǐ 吗ma ？”

妈妈mā ma 说shuō ：”自己zì jǐ 的de 事情shì qing 要yào 自己zì jǐ 做zuò ，今天jīn tiān 的de 事情shì qing 也yě 要yào 今天jīn tiān 完成wán chéng ，不bù 要yào 留liú 到dào 明天míng tiān 。”

李明lǐ míng 说shuō ：”好hǎo 吧ba ，妈妈mā ma ，你nǐ 可以kě yǐ 把bǎ 刚才gāng cái 的de 蛋糕dàn gāo 给gěi 我wǒ 吗ma ？这zhè 是shì 今天jīn tiān 的de 蛋糕dàn gāo ，所以suǒ yǐ 我wǒ 要yào 今天jīn tiān 把bǎ 它tā 吃chī 完wán 。”

Today's topic is, how to be more confident when speaking in meetings.

Some of you might know this already but my full time job is working with non native English speakers, one to one, on video calls to improve their confidence and ability when using English at work. And the number one thing that people tell me they need to improve is their confidence in meetings! How can I become more confident in meetings, how can I express my ideas better, how can I make my meetings easier. This is what we’re going to discuss today. 

For non-native English speakers, speaking in meetings can be a challenging and daunting task. Whether you’re presenting in front of a large group or just participating in a small discussion, it can be difficult to feel confident in your ability to express yourself. However, with a few simple tips, you can start speaking more confidently in meetings sooner rather than later.

At the same time, we’re going to look at some useful vocabulary and sentence structures that we can use to do this. So if you want to grab a pen to take some notes, feel free, and let’s get started.

Oh, and right at the end we’ll review a couple of the more interesting pieces of vocabulary I’ve included in today’s podcast.

Hari ini aku mau cerita sedikit tentang satu budaya di Indonesia, yaitu uang rokok. Mungkin kamu sudah pernah dengar ya? Uang rokok itu sebenarnya seperti tip kecil, tanda terima kasih untuk orang yang sudah membantu kita.
Misalnya, kalau ada tukang AC yang datang memperbaiki AC di rumah, kadang kita kasih sedikit uang tambahan. Nggak banyak, tapi cukup untuk bilang, “makasih ya, sudah bantu.” Dan lucunya, meskipun namanya “uang rokok”, bukan berarti harus dipakai untuk beli rokok.
Tapi ada hal menarik juga. Uang rokok ini bisa bikin suasana berubah. Contohnya, ada seorang kurir yang setiap bulan mengantar paket ke rumah yang sama. Suatu hari, pemilik rumah kasih dia uang rokok sebagai ucapan terima kasih karena selalu datang tepat waktu. Setelah itu, kurirnya jadi makin rajin senyum dan lebih semangat setiap kali datang. Tapi suatu hari, waktu pemilik rumah lupa kasih uang rokok, si kurir tetap sopan dan ramah sih, hanya saja auranya berubah sedikit, dari yang biasanya “100 watt” jadi “50 watt.” 😆
Jadi, memang uang rokok bisa memengaruhi suasana hati atau semangat kerja seseorang. Kadang pelayanan juga bisa terasa beda, tergantung besar atau kecilnya tip yang diterima.
Menurutku, uang rokok itu boleh banget jadi bentuk terima kasih. Tapi idealnya, orang harus tetap bekerja dengan baik karena itu adalah tanggung jawabnya, bukan karena mengharapkan tipnya.
