El récord en ventas de una obra de Kahlo en subasta había sido de 8 millones de dólares, impuesto en 2016 por Dos desnudos en el bosque (1939). Mientras tanto, otras dos obras de la pintora mexicana subastadas en Christie’s en 2019 recaudaron casi los 9 millones de dólares: Retrato de una mujer de blanco (1929) fue vendida a un comprador privado en Nueva York por 5,8 millones de dólares, mientras que Canasta con flores (1941) se vendió en 3,1 millones. Pinturas como Raíces (1943) se vendieron por 5,6 millones de dólares a la cantante Madonna y la pintura de Kahlo, Diego y yo (1944), fue la primera obra de una artista latinoamericana en romper la barrera del millón de dólares al momento de su venta, cerrando con un precio de subasta de 1,4 millones de dólares en una subasta.

La obra de Frida Kahlo comenzó basándose en el retrato de personas cercanas a su vida, los que han ayudado luego a suponer la identidad de otros personajes desconocidos en las pinturas de Kahlo. Sus primeras piezas se comparan con el arte clásico europeo, también siendo comparado muchas veces con la técnica del Renacimiento, usada por pintores como Botticelli y Bronzino. Las obras de Kahlo navegan entre las descripciones de los movimientos avant-garde, la nueva objetividad y el cubismo. Un periodo de su vida dio un giro al estilo de su pintura, acercando su inspiración y su estilo hacia el folklore mexicano. Historiadores del arte sugieren que el acercamiento de Frida Kahlo hacia las raíces mexicanas, pudo haber estado influenciado por la obra de Adolfo Best Maugard sobre el mismo tema, en donde predominaban la falta de perspectiva y la combinación de los elementos de los periodos prehispánicos del arte mexicano.
