The Grammar of Time — Already, Still, Yet, Since, Until, Again | Learn Malayalam #260
Description
A small class about a set of words learners systematically get wrong. They are undertaught everywhere because they do not fit neatly into a grammar chapter — and getting them right makes an immediate difference to how natural you sound.
ALREADY
കഴിഞ്ഞു — literally, it is finished
ഞാൻ കഴിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു I have already eaten · അവൻ പോയി കഴിഞ്ഞു he has already gone
സമയം കഴിഞ്ഞു the time is already up
And the perfect: ഞാൻ കഴിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് · for emphasis, ഇപ്പോൾ തന്നെ right now, already
STILL
ഇപ്പോഴും even now
അവൻ ഇപ്പോഴും ഇവിടെയുണ്ട് he is still here · ഇപ്പോഴും മഴ പെയ്യുന്നു it is still raining
എനിക്ക് ഇപ്പോഴും മനസ്സിലായില്ല I still don't understand
ഇനിയും still more, further · ഇനിയും വേണോ? do you want more still?
YET, AND NOT YET
ഇതുവരെ up to now
ഇതുവരെ വന്നിട്ടില്ല hasn't come yet · ഞാൻ ഇതുവരെ കഴിച്ചിട്ടില്ല I haven't eaten yet
കഴിഞ്ഞോ? is it done yet? · ആയോ? is it ready yet? · ആയില്ല not yet
ONLY JUST
-തേയുള്ളൂ — very useful, very natural, and almost no course teaches it
ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോൾ വന്നതേയുള്ളൂ I have only just come
അവൻ ഇപ്പോൾ പോയതേയുള്ളൂ he has only just left
AGAIN — THREE WORDS, THREE JOBS
വീണ്ടും neutral repetition: അവൻ വീണ്ടും വന്നു
ഒന്നുകൂടി one more time in a sequence: ഒന്നുകൂടി പറയാമോ?
ഇനിയും again in the future — what you say inviting somebody back: ഇനിയും വരണം
SINCE AND FOR — WHERE ENGLISH SPEAKERS GO WRONG
Malayalam does not distinguish them the way English does. Duration takes -ആയി:
മൂന്ന് ദിവസമായി it has been three days · രണ്ട് വർഷമായി ഞാൻ ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്
എത്ര നാളായി? how long has it been? · കുറേ നാളായി it's been quite a while
That -ആയി is ആകുക. Elapsed time is expressed as a change of state — three days have BECOME — which is a rather elegant way to think about it.
The starting point takes -മുതൽ: ഇന്നലെ മുതൽ since yesterday · രാവിലെ മുതൽ since morning · ചെറുപ്പം മുതൽ since childhood
ഇന്നലെ മുതൽ പനിയുണ്ട് and രണ്ട് ദിവസമായി പനിയുണ്ട് are both correct, both natural, and a doctor will ask you one of them.
UNTIL, BEFORE, AFTER
-വരെ until: നാളെ വരെ · ആറ് മണി വരെ · ഞാൻ വരുന്നത് വരെ കാത്തിരിക്കണം
മുൻപ് before · ശേഷം after · കഴിഞ്ഞ് after, having finished: ജോലി കഴിഞ്ഞ് വരാം
FREQUENCY
എപ്പോഴും always · ഒരിക്കലും never (and it takes a NEGATIVE verb) · ചിലപ്പോൾ sometimes
പലപ്പോഴും often · അപൂർവ്വമായി rarely · എന്നും every day · ദിവസവും daily
ആഴ്ചയിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ once a week · ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ now and then · സാധാരണ usually · പതിവുപോലെ as usual
SEQUENCING
ആദ്യം first · പിന്നെ then · അതിനുശേഷം after that · ഒടുവിൽ finally
അപ്പോൾ at that time · അതിനിടയിൽ meanwhile · പെട്ടെന്ന് suddenly · ഉടനെ immediately
These words are the joints of narrative. Clause chaining tells you how sentences connect; these tell the listener where in time each clause sits.
