Description
The letter A, and the sounds around it, cover several different vowels in English: the "a" of "cat", the long "aa" of "father", and the short "uh" of "cup". Indian English uses its own versions of all three, and in some words it follows British rather than American patterns. To an American ear, "bad" may sound close to "bed", "can't" may sound like "kaant", and "cup" may sound close to "cap". What you will learn: тАв Three A-type vowels тАв The "cat" vowel: sometimes closer to "bed" тАв The long "aa" in "ask", "dance" and "can'T" тАв "can" versus "can'T": easier than you think тАв The short "uh" of "cup" тАв The long "aa" of "father" and "car" тАв Quick contrast table тАв Practice: decode the sentence тАв Listening strategies тАв Self-check questions to test your ear Level: B1тАУB2.
