Check out how much you understand the sentences with a voice recording. 
Never look at the sentences when listening to the voice recording. 
And Listen to the sentence repeatedly until you hear it completely.

NANCY: Yes, it’s that way. You go three blocks to Washington Street, 
then turn right. It’s on the corner, across from the bank.
MARK: Thanks! I’ve only been in town a few days, so I really don’t 
know my way around yet.
NANCY: Oh, I know how you feel. We moved here a year ago, and 
I still don’t know where everything is!



LANGUAGE NOTES
• Could you tell me … is slightly more polite than “Can you tell me …?”
• Could you tell me where the library is? Notice that “library” is stressed here because 
it is the word with the important information. This is an indirect question, so the subject 
(the library) comes before the verb (is). The word order is reversed in a direct question 
(Where is the library?).
• Yes, it’s that way. Notice the stress on “that.” The speaker is pointing in a certain 
direction and wants to emphasize that direction.
• I know how you feel is a way of saying “I understand.” Notice the emphasis on “feel.” 
The speaker wants to show empathy and understanding.
• I still don’t know where everything is! Notice the word order of where “everything 
is.” The subject (everything) comes before the verb (is). This word order is different from 
the direct question (Where is everything?)

先月サウジアラビアから帰国したということで、しばらくサウジアラビアに関するエピソードをお話します。今日は家を出てサウジアラビアへ入国するまでについてのストーリーです。飛行機での旅行に使えるフレーズを学べます。

【スクリプト】
こんにちは、皆さん。お元気ですか？佳子です！今日のテーマは「2年ぶりのサウジアラビアへ～3歳の息子と24時間の旅～」です。前回もお伝えしましたが、先月サウジアラビアから帰国したので、しばらくはサウジアラビアに関するエピソードをお届けしたいと思います。今日のフレーズは「目に遭う」です。意味を知らない人はどういう意味か想像しながら聞いてみてくださいね。

私は石川県金沢市に住んでいます。なので、海外に行くときは大阪にある関西国際空港（略して関空）をいつも利用しています。海外旅行に行くときはいつも一苦労です。3歳の子どもとの二人旅ならなおさらです。夜11時くらいのフライトだったので、金沢駅を夕方4時に出発し、特急電車で関空に向かいました。幼児との長旅は昼寝のタイミングが重要です。フライトに合わせて適切なタイミングで昼寝をしなければ、あとで大変な目に遭います。こちらの期待通り途中1時間ちょっと寝てくれたので、一つ目のフライトでほとんど寝てくれると思いました。大阪駅に着いて、空港行きのリムジンバス乗り場に向かいます。大阪駅から空港行きの快速電車に乗り換えることもできましたが、時間的に座れない可能性があったので、空港直通バスにしました。でも、大きなスーツケースを持って幼児とバス乗り場に行くのは結構大変でした。10分ほど歩いて、バス乗り場に着いたらやっぱり全然乗客がいませんでした。同じバスに乗った乗客は私たちの他に2人だけ。バスの収益はどうなっているの？大丈夫なの？と思いました。
無事に関空に着いて、エミレーツ航空のチェックインカウンターで手続きをしました。用意した書類が認められるかドキドキ。でも、特に問題なくスムーズに搭乗券をもらえました。フライトまで2時間以上あったので、保安検査場に向かう前に夜ごはんを食べることにしました。ご存じの方も多いと思いますが、現在、日本へは観光目的で入国することができません。なので、関空は本当に閑散としていました。夜21時ともなると、開いている飲食店はコンビニ、マクドナルド、すき家、カフェくらいしかなかったです。私たちはすき家でテイクアウトし、お腹を満たしました。そのあとすぐに保安検査場、出国審査場を通り、搭乗口へ。本館から電車に乗り、搭乗口へ向かいました。待合スペースからは大きなエミレーツ航空などの飛行機が見え、息子は大興奮。息子は久しぶりの空港を楽しんでいました。
22時半、いよいよ、搭乗です。フライトは行きも帰りも真ん中のブロックの一番後ろの通路側を選びました。理由はトイレにすぐ行けるからです。3歳児との長時間のフライトで一番困るのはトイレです。幸いなことに、息子は機内食を少し食べるとすぐに膝の上で寝ました。4列席が空いていたので、そこにそっと寝かせ、離陸後2時間程で自由を手に入れました。11時間のフライトのあとは、ドバイで乗り継ぎです。ドバイの空港はコロナ以前と変わらず賑わっていました。サウジアラビアへ到着すると日本みたいに検疫はなく、入国審査だけでした。息子を抱っこしながら30分ほどで入国審査場を通過しました。心配していたよりもあっさり通過できたので、肩の荷が下りました。

どうでしたか？今日も飛行機での旅行に役立つフレーズがたくさん出てきましたね。そして、今日のフレーズ「目に遭う」の意味はわかりましたか？「目に遭う」は「直接経験する、体験する」という意味です。大抵はネガティブな意味で使われます。「大変な目に遭う」「辛い目に遭う」「痛い目に遭う」「嫌な目に遭う」「散々な目に遭う」「怖い目に遭う」「危ない目に遭う」という形で使われることが多いです。例文を挙げてみましょう。「日本の空港でロストバゲージしたんですか？それは大変な目に遭いましたね。」「自転車は両手で運転しようね。じゃないと、転んで痛い目に遭うよ。」「今日は1時間寝坊して、傘を忘れて家を出たから、途中大雨が降ってさ。オフィスに着く前にびしょびしょになったよ。ほんと散々な目に遭った。」皆さんもぜひ「目に遭う」を使ってみてくださいね！それではまた、バイバーイ。
