Hi, This is the podcast episode 16. It has been getting warmer and warmer in Osaka this week. The forecast for next week is for a high of over 10 degrees Celsius. I’m from Tokyo, and the weather in Osaka is much nicer than in Tokyo. It is sunny most days. I hope spring will come soon because the cold weather will make our electricity bill higher.

もうすぐ春なので、最近は引越しをする人が多いです。日本では、3月から4月は学校や会社が始まるシーズンで、学生や新社会人が一人暮らしを始めるからです。私も授業で、生徒さんとよく引越しの話をします。国によって引越しのシステムやプロセスが違うので面白いですね。

It's almost spring, so many people are moving out these days. In Japan, March-April is the season for schools and companies to start, and it's because students and those who just graduated school and became working adults start living alone. In my classes, I often talk about moving with my students. It's interesting because the system and process of moving differs from country to country.

日本で家を借りるときは、ほとんどの場合、不動産業者と契約をします。まず不動産業者のウェブサイトを見て、希望に合う部屋を探します。広さや、駅からの距離や、築年数が書かれています。「築年数」とは、建物の古さのことです。建てられてから１年経ったアパートは、「築１年」といいます。日本では新しいアパートのほうが人気があるので、新しいアパートのほうが値段が高いです。建てられて１年未満で、まだ誰も住んでいない家を「新築」といいます。

When you rent a house in Japan, you almost always sign a contract with a real estate agent. The first thing to do is to look at the real estate agent's website and find a room that fits your needs. You will find the size of the room, the distance from the station, and the age of the building. “Chikunensuu” (the age of the building) refers to how old the building is. An apartment built one year ago is said to be “Chiku 1nen” (1 year old building). In Japan, newer apartments are more popular, so newer apartments are more expensive. A house that has been built for less than a year and no one is living in it yet is called “Shinchiku” (newly built).

the difference between 放松 and 轻松, show me with examples
放松 (fàng sōng) and 轻松 (qīng sōng) are both adjectives that can be translated as "relaxed" in English. However, there are some subtle differences in how they are used.
放松 (fàng sōng)  is a more general term that refers to the state of being relaxed or at ease. For example:
我喜欢做瑜伽，因为它能让我放松。(I like doing yoga because it helps me relax.)
wǒ xǐ huān zuò yú jiā, yīn wéi tā néng ràng wǒ fàng sōng.
假期让我放松许多。(The vacation helped me relax a lot.)
jià qī ràng wǒ fàng sōng xǔ duō.

轻松 (qīng sōng) on the other hand, is often used to describe an activity or task that is easy and not very demanding. For example:
这道题目太轻松了，我很快就会做出来。(This problem is too easy. I'll finish it quickly.)
zhè dào tí mù tài qīng sōng le, wǒ hěn kuài jiù huì zuò chū lái.
这项工作对我来说很轻松。(This job is very easy for me.)
zhè xiàng gōng zuò duì wǒ lái shuō hěn qīng sōng.

So, while both words refer to a state of relaxation, 放松 is more general and refers to a general feeling of relaxation, while 轻松 is more specific and refers to an activity or task that is easy and not very demanding.

People who travel a lot will know the feeling — you've just landed in a country on the other side of the world, ready to explore and see the sights, but you're too tired to do anything!

Jet lag is usually linked with travel and changing time zones. But a new study has found that even small changes to our daily schedules can change our sleeping patterns.

And it's not just sleep that gets affected by a disrupted schedule — our bodies work differently when our daily patterns change.

The study, published in iScience, looked at how our bodies respond to a five-hour time change — similar to the kind of jet lag you'd feel after traveling from New York to London, for example.

It looked at people's circadian rhythm — our body's natural clock that controls when we sleep, when different hormones are released, and how our bodies use energy.

During the study, scientists observed 14 people in a lab for eight days.

On the first two days, the participants followed their normal daily schedules. But from the third day, the participants' meals, sleep and light exposure were changed to five hours later than normal.

The researchers tested the participants' blood and checked their digestion, energy use, and levels of melatonin — a hormone that helps control sleep by making you feel tired when it gets dark — to see how their bodies reacted to the time change.

The results showed that the five-hour time change made digestion slower, changed blood sugar levels, and affected how the body used fat. The body also burned less energy from food.

These things started to go back to normal after two or three days as the body adjusted to the new schedule.

One of the study's researchers, Jonathan Johnston, told StudyFinds this shows how sticking to a regular schedule can make a big difference to our health.

ESTE CUENTO NOS HABLA DE: La Carta.


El pequeño pueblo de Santa Cruz vivía sumido en una eterna calma. Sus habitantes, gente sencilla y trabajadora, se conocían todos y sus vidas transcurrían con una monotonía reconfortante. Hasta que llegó la carta.

Era una mañana soleada cuando el cartero, con paso cansado, depositó la misiva en el buzón de la casa de María. Un sobre grande, de un color amarillo pálido, que contrastaba con la pintura descascarillada de la puerta. María sintió un escalofrío al tomarla entre sus manos. No esperaba cartas, y menos una tan grande.

Con dedos temblorosos, rasgó el sobre y extrajo una hoja llena de una letra elegante y desconocida. Era una carta de su hermana, Ana, a quien no veía desde hacía más de veinte años. En la carta, Ana le contaba sobre su vida en la ciudad, sobre sus éxitos y sus fracasos, pero sobre todo, le pedía perdón. Perdón por haberla abandonado, por no haber estado presente en los momentos más difíciles de su vida.

María leyó la carta una y otra vez, tratando de comprender las palabras de su hermana. Sentimientos encontrados la inundaban: rabia, dolor, pero también una inmensa tristeza. Había pasado tantos años guardando rencor, que ahora no sabía cómo reaccionar.

Los días siguientes fueron una montaña rusa emocional para María. Recordó su infancia, los juegos con Ana, las promesas que se habían hecho. Pero también recordó la traición, el dolor de sentirse abandonada.

Finalmente, decidió responderle a su hermana. Tomó una pluma y comenzó a escribir, con la esperanza de encontrar la paz que tanto anhelaba.
