In this episode, I share a funny experience I had while shopping at a Japanese supermarket in Indonesia. What I first thought was simply a group of customers carefully choosing their dinner turned out to be something completely different.

This story is not only about shopping. It is also about cultural differences, good habits, and the meaning of the proverb "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Is following local customs always the best choice? Or are there times when we should keep the good habits we already have?

The episode is spoken in natural Japanese at a comfortable pace for learners. I hope you enjoy the story, and I'd love to hear whether your language or culture has a similar saying.

今回のエピソードでは、インドネシアで日本人向けのスーパーに買い物へ行ったときの、ちょっと恥ずかしくて面白い体験をお話しします。

最初は「日本人は本当に慎重だなあ」と思っていた出来事が、実はまったく違う意味だったことに後で気づきました。

この話は、買い物の話だけではありません。
「郷に入れば郷に従え」ということわざや、文化の違い、そして良い習慣についても考えてみたいと思います。

どうして日本語の勉強をしているんですか。
日本のドラマを見るのが好きなんです。あー、でも、今日のドラマ番組表（ばんぐみひょう）をチェックするのを忘（わす）れました。

ラヒルさん、漢字（かんじ）の勉強はどうですか。
漢字は書（か）くのはむずかしいです。
読（よ）むのもむずかしいです。
あー、そうですね。でも、がんばって覚（おぼ）えてください。
漢字は意味があります。意味がわかると、たのしいですよ。

みなさんは、関西国際空港（かんさいこくさいくうこう）を知（し）っていますか。
大阪（おおさか）にある空港ですね。
関西国際空港は、海の上にあるのを知っていますか。
そうなんです。実（じつ）は、海（うみ）の上にあるんです。

きょうは、「のは」「のが」「のを」ですね。「の」は「こと」にかえられますね。
作文を書くのが好きなんです。作文を書くことが好きです。
番組表（ばんぐみひょう）をチェックするのを忘れました。　番組表をチェックすることを忘れました。
漢字を書くのはむずかしいです。漢字を書くことはむずかしいです。
何が違いますか。「のは」は話すときに、たくさん使（つか）いますね。
そして、「です」の前は「の」は使えません。
「私の仕事（しごと）は日本語を教（おし）えることです」これは正しいです。でも、「私の仕事は日本語を教えるのです」とはいいません。
そして、「私はアメリカに行ったことがあります」「泳（およ）ぐことができます」の「こと」は「の」にすることはできません。注意してくださいね。
