Preparing for Virtual Job Interviews EP 37
Description
It's important to prepare properly for virtual interviews. These are some tips that you should follow in addition to in person interview strategies:
Test your equipment well in advance. Do test calls with friends and family to check your camera, microphone and internet connection work smoothly. Have a backup plan if issues arise.
Familiarize yourself with the interview platform.
Choose your interview space carefully. Opt for a quiet, well-lit room with a neutral background if possible. Minimize distractions and ensure good lighting on your face.
Make sure to dress professionally. First impressions matter, even virtually.
Wear professional attire as if for an in-person interview.
Avoid flashy jewelry or clothing.
Review the job description and your resume thoroughly to be able to discuss how your qualifications align with what they need. Have examples ready of your skills and accomplishments.
Learn about the company, its culture, and values.
Understand the job role and required skills.
Practice answering common questions out loud. Record yourself and review for ways to speak more clearly and engage the camera more. Work on your speaking voice and body language.
Nerves show up differently online.
Conduct mock interviews with a communication coach or career counselor. Book a session with me.
Be punctual—log in a few minutes early.
Stay calm and confident.
Be present. Smile, make eye contact with the camera, and listen actively.
Ask if you can take notes during the interview.
Interviews are a two-way street. Ask questions too to see if the role and company are right for you.
Follow-Up:
Send a thank you email post-interview.
Reflect on your performance and note areas for improvement.
Schedule a post interview coaching session to discuss further interviews, contract negotiation, and preparing for the role.
