This is called 'reported speech'.
It is a very important, but sometimes confusing, part of English.
Mr. Underhill: "Our business is our own."
He said that their business was their own.
He said the business is being their own.
He said that his business is being by his own.

"is their own" because we can assume that it IS [still] their own after having said so.

Why using "was" if it's meant in the past and now they don't own... or I'm wrong
