Through I view Narnia,I found some phrases about "rafter" which I don't understand such as "rafter to the next" and "rafter to rafter".The paragraph which has those phrases says that Polly explored her house's attic.That situation can not exist boat,so what mean is "rafter to rafter" in that situation? I will appreciate it if you can solve my question.

"Rafters" are the wooden beams that are visible in the attic of a house. They're part of the framework and they serve to support the roof. Do an image search for the term to see photos of them.
