what is the difference between ritual and routine?

Ritual has more intentionality and meaning. Routine is more of a habit or certain order of doing things. Rituals can include some routines, but a ritual is usually done for a reason- to calm down before bed, to connect with memories, to celebrate or honor someone or something.
You might have a daily routine of how you get ready for work: shower, get dressed, eat breakfast…, and you might have a ritual to relax when you’re home in the evening where you light a candle, take deep breaths, take a warm bath. Or a ritual that you perform on certain holidays to mark the occasion. I hope this helps.
