Is it more common to say “el perro” or “la perra” even when the dog is female?
I have a female dog so do I need to say “mi perro” to avoid sounding vulgar by saying “perra”?

Hi, good question, you can say "mi perro" if it's male or "mi perra" if it's female, don't worry about sounding vulgar, you will not sound like that, remember that gender is very important in spanish
