If you audit a class, you take it for no credit, and do not have to do the assignments or take tests. You just attend the class and learn from the lectures. You are registered and will pay for the course as if you were taking it for credit.
When you sit in on a class, you are not registered in any official capacity and don’t have to pay. At most schools, it will be up to each progress or to decide if they allow sit ins.
