It's a way of saying hello, mostly used in the US South and West. Its origin is from the English "How do ye do," shortened to "How d'e do", and now mostly just "Howdy." I'm for the American South, and still use it sometimes.

Originally this was a common saying in Texas. As someone born and raised in Texas... I never say this. It's just another word for "Hello."
