What is the difference between abbreviation , initialism and acronym ?

An abbreviation is when you shorten, or abbreviate, words or phrases. So kg is an abbreviation of kilogram.
An initialisation is when you pronounce the individual letters of an abbreviation, so you call the the British Broadcasting Corporation the BBC, as Bee BeeCee.
An acronym is using the letters in a name or phrase. The National Air and Space Administration is NASA.
The descriptions are not rigid as you can see.
