In the below sentence I am not sure about the meaning of "of being"?
-Life can not possibly function without scale and levels of being; they are part of its modus operandi
Does it mean life may not function without the existing ofr scale and levels?

The prepositional phrase "of being" is defining "levels." I can't be sure without more context, but I think the point that then author wants to make is that species need large populations of individuals to survive.
