What does fits mean as in fits of terror?

I would define a “fit” of this sort as a relatively short, quite intense episode, usually of something undesirable.

The word "fit", as a noun, has two very different meanings:
"Those shoes are a good fit." (means they are the right size)
"Calm down. Don't have a fit." (means don't lose your temper)
