What does "bombs start going off in the air" mean? It came from the horror movie. One of the main characters said : "The sky is getting dark so fast and bombs start going off in the air. And then thunder and lighting. I've never seen anything like this before." What does "bombs start going off in the air" means? Does it means the wind is starting to blow very fast and fly up in the sky? Please kindly advise. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Noonoi. Like the phrase you pointed out in the other question you posted (about a gangster movie), "bombs start going off in the air" could be interpreted literally (i.e., means what it says) or figuratively (i.e., using artistic license). In this case, actual bombs could have been exploding in the air (the literal interpretation) or it could mean that the sound and light from the thunder and lightning was similar to that of bombs (and the author was using it metaphorically. The context of the situation in the movie should make it clear which way it was used.

The 'bombs start going off in the air' is basically a way to say the thunder and lighting was loud and looked like bombs in the air.
