Why do “progeny” and “progenitor” have opposite meanings?

Progeny is a descendant or the descendants of a person, animal, or plant, offspring.
Progenitor a person or thing of which a person, animal, or plant is descended or originates, an ancestor or a parent. It also could be a person who originates a culture or intellectual movement.

An orator orates or makes orations.
An instructor instructs.
A progenitor makes progeny.
Neither word is very common.
