Is it correct to say "amount of people"?

You'll hear native speakers say that quite frequently, but I would prefer to speak of the "number of people", as we are dealing with a countable noun, not a mass noun.

Grammatically it is incorrect. Amount is not used for countable nouns. However, in practice, there is a difference between what the grammar rules say and what people say in real life. People do say amount of people.
