I’ve never understood, It probably has some grammar rules.
A: I forgot to lock the door.
B: I forgot locking the door.
I am not sure but in this case, I am using I forgot to lock the door because it sounds better to me.

A means that you didn't lock the door.
B means that you locked the door but you have no memory of doing so.

We would not say ' I forgot locking the door'

The meanings are very different!
I forgot to lock the door. (I’m sure that in the past I didn’t lock the door)
I forget locking the door. (In the present, I’m not sure if I locked the door in the past.)
I forgot locking the door. (In the past, I wasn’t sure if I had locked the door in the more distant past.)
