1. He curls his lip
Correct forms:
He curls his lip - normal, natural
His lip is curled by him - correct grammar, but strange
His lip curls - also correct
Why?
He curls his lip = He does the action
His lip curls = The lip moves (no person needed)
We usually prefer simple sentences, so,
Use: He curls his lip
2. A sudden silence fell
Correct:
A sudden silence fell
Silence suddenly fell (but less common)
Wrong:
a falling sudden silence
Why?
In English, we say: adjective + noun - a sudden silence
NOT: a falling sudden silence (wrong order + confusing meaning)
If you want a phrase:
a sudden silence falling (better, but still not common)
Best choice: A sudden silence fell
3. An expectant hush fell on the guests
Correct:
An expectant hush fell on the guests
Wrong:
An expectant hush falling on the guests (not a full sentence)
Hush expectantly fell on the guests (sounds wrong)
Why?
Sentence needs a verb
fell - good sentence
falling - not a full sentence
Adverb problem
“expectantly” is not used this way
English speakers don’t say: hush expectantly fell
VERY SIMPLE RULES
Use Subject + Verb
Silence fell
He curls his lip
Use Adjective + Noun
a sudden silence
an expectant hush
Don’t mix word order
Don’t use “-ing” if you want a full sentence FINAL BEST ANSWERS:
1. He curls his lip / His lip curls
2. A sudden silence fell
3. An expectant hush fell on the guests
