Does "kept me going" mean "kept me from going"?

I don't think so. It means that something has given him energy to continue and not get tired, depressed, or discouraged. It has enabled him to keep going on.
I think "the joint" means a prison or jail. When he was in jail, what enabled him to survive psychologically was dreaming and hoping about living near a beach someday.
