The way I always understood this (and you have to bear with me here because I usually don't read scripture in English) – this goes back to Luke 12:35-40 which is about the expectation of the advent of Christ. The wedding He has gone to attend is that with the Church, His bride. And upon His return He is ready to serve the servants who are found faithful and diligent in His work. So, diligence is the effort to do one's part while keeping faith and reliance in Christ while we are waiting for His advent. That is where diligence and faith come together. You can't know, despite your efforts, how it will all work out. However diligence, when combined with faith, assures spiritual success, since "You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." (Luke 12:40)

I think the duty of diligence means the importance of making sure that things are done in a conscientious way, with perseverance and care. 'The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied' (Proverbs 13:4).

I presume that it means: to do the work of God in a serious and conscientious way.
