أطفال----> is used in a general way , which exacly means children. أبناء ----> is basically used to mean sons we say : هذا ابني ---> this is my son , here ابني is a singular to أبناء But in any case saying أبناء or أطفال is the same. i hope that helped.

Look, ابناء sound more formal and it means (sons) but you can use (اولاد)to be more natural. No brainer اطفال=children! Get it?
