Plz help~ 1.Which tense is better, perfect past tense or simple past tense, and why? 2.”pain” is an uncountable nouns, why I should add “an” before “excruciating “?

1. Simple past tense is better because it's more straightforward and more natural. Perfect past tense would be better for more formal writing. 2. A rule of English is that when there is a word that begins with a bowel or has a bowel sound as the first syllable, "an" must be used.
