Is common to say pitch black, are there other forms?

It definitely is common to say "pitch black", but another common phrase that's roughly equivalent is "completely dark."

Yes it is very common.you can also say pitch dark. Meaning the same.
You can say… it was only 6pm when I was coming home from work, but it was pitch black.
